Having opened it's doors in 1958, the Tonga Hut claims the title of being L.A.'s oldest tiki bar still in operation today.

A brief history on Tiki Culture:
The 50's and 60's found the United States in a state of change, self discovery, and new found world prominence on the heals of World War II. The middle class was taking the country by storm with ever expanding lifestyles that included the suburbs, 2.4 kids, a two car garage, and a shift in the American dream. Concurrently taking the nation by storm was tiki culture which eventually lead to at least one tiki bar in almost every city and backyard luaus becoming just as common as the traditional backyard BBQs.

Established in 1935, right after the American dark age of prohibition ended, and originally known as Pike's Place, this establishment was run by one of newsman Bob Scheiffer's relatives; who is known today as simply Mr. Scheiffer.

Located just a few blocks east of Highland Ave. on Hollywood Blvd., dating back to the 1930s and rumored to have been a speakeasy, the Frolic Room is the last remaining true bar on Hollywood Blvd. You might even say that the Frolic Room is one of the last "real" things left on the Blvd.
